Prefinished Hardwood Flooring

Why would a crack develop down the middle of a hardwood floor board?

I had prefinished solid oak hardwood floors professionally installed last summer. Today I noticed a crack running lengthwise down the center of one of the boards. What would cause this? Did the installer not leave enough room for expansion/contraction of the wood? We have not used the room yet. What could be done to fix it? Thanks!

You didn’t say if the cracked board is curved downward or upward or just lays flat. If it’s up or down then the flooring did not have room for expansion. It’s not likely to have a low spot under the cracked board so I opt for the expansion. Take off the base molding at both sides of the room and check if you have at least a 3/8″ space between the floorboards and the 2X4. If you do not have space then that’s the problem. If you’re lucky it’s only one board-the cracked one. Call the installer and have them replace it at no charge, if not take them to small claims court after getting 2 estimates stating why it has to be replaced and the cost.
