alternative energy professions?

what should i study if i want to go into the alternative energy field? designing more efficient ways to create electricity? electrical, mechanical, nuclear engineering? or physics?

For what you’re saying you wish to do, you’ll want to get your BSE in Electrical Engineering, or in Chemical Engineering. I think the most needed specialty today is in Batteries. The Batteries we produce are nowhere near where they’ll need to be if we will get away from our addiction to foreign oil.
But, there are other options; You could major in Environmental Science. With a Physics degree, you’d definitely need graduate school. You could major in Mechanical Engineering, and afterwords work for a company that produces products you believe in. (i.e. Wind Turbines) You could major in Computer Science, and afterwords work for a similar company, as every productive company has computing needs.
