Cool Your Patio With An Awning Or Shade Sail

Patios are most often created to catch the sun. Not necessarily the scorching heat of the midday sun, but enough rays to give that good sense of well being that we get from plenty of vitamin D.

As a place for people to get together, kids to play, barbeque, and a lot of other activities, your patio can become one of the most used areas of your home.

However, it is possible for too much sun to make being on the patio uncomfortable. Adding an awning to your patio design plans will help protect you from the sun and also provide shelter from passing showers. A patio awning or canopy can be an extremely important addition for adding comfort outdoors.

An awning can be either retracting or a fixed permanent type. A fixed awning, as its name suggests, stays in the same position all the time. Most often it’s some type of shading cloth attached to a permanent metal frame. Quick and easy to store away, retractable awnings can be purchased in either electric or crank operated versions. Retractable awnings are especially useful in properties or landscaping ideas where they must be taken down for winter and put back up again in spring.

An alternative to a complete awning is a shade sail. Shade sails can be custom made to any size you require, or you can combine a number of smaller ones to cover a larger area. Shade sails are installed using simple tension mechanisms – the sails, which are often triangular, are attached to tension points which are most generally placed on walls or on top of poles stuck in the ground. Sails have the advantage of being portable: if you happen to sell your home, you can take the it to your new home and reinstall it there.

Shade structures were once all made from canvas. However, these days we have more to choose from. There are many different acrylic fabrics that are sewn together to create shade cloths. Not just fancy garden decoration, these newer cloths are weather resistant which lessens the chances of sun or storm damage and gives them a much longer life. How tight the cloth is weaved determines how much filtered light gets through to the patio. It also means more or less material which affects pricing.

Shade sails and patio awnings keep sun lovers safe from too much sun while enjoying their patios. Being available in almost any existing color pallet, they can also do a good job of reducing glare.

Any ideas for my 14th birthday party?
