Lead Acid Battery Chargers

lead acid battery chargers
Can you make a 12 volt lead acid battery charger from a computer PSU?

I know on the 12 volt rail there can be anything from 4.5 to 15 amps on the positive lead with about 0.5 amps on the earth wire.

I am looking at ways to use parts of these PSU’s when they no longer power a computer but voltages still read at the ends of the wires.

If this can’t be done could someone at least explain why not

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the answers so far but I still don’t understand, most battery chargers sold today are of the 3 – 5 amp range and you can get a computer PSU rated at 15 amps on the 12 volt rail so why would this not work and if not what uses can be found for old PSU’s ?

Many batteries in vehicles these days are in excess of 750 CCA, which means that a PSU from your computer just doesn’t have the amp output it takes to really charge a 12 lead-acid battery for your vehicle.
